We will have in-class reviews & quizzes, projects (creative and analysis), presentations, and homework to help us practice and improve. You will get to read stories spanning from mystery to comedy and learn how to write 5-paragraph essays to show your understanding and creativity. The class will move at a pace that matches how well everyone is doing with the materials. This class builds on what you’ve already learned, with a deeper focus on literary analysis and more advanced grammar. You’ll also get an introduction to research skills and media literacy to help you evaluate online resources and stories. In this class, you’ll engage in creative writing, deliver a presentation, and write two major essays (one literary analysis and one persuasive essay). We will read both fiction and non-fiction, exploring genres like short stories, poetry, non-fiction, mystery, and drama. The class will progress based on how well everyone is doing with the materials. Since we have students from different grades, we’ll consider different sets of factors when assessing progress. You will also have the opportunity to participate in the Scholastic Arts and Writing Competition. We aim for you to excel and feel confident in your writing skills, ready to take on future assignments and personal writing projects with boldness and courage.
