Room: HUM3016
Time: Sunday 9:15AM - 10:00AM
Grades: 9-11
Prerequisites: Chemistry1
Material fee: $0.00
Description: The classes cover a wide range of chemistry topics, including atomic and molecular structures, chemical reactions, thermodynamics, and electrochemistry, along with an introduction to proteins, carbohydrates, organic chemistry, and nucleic acids. Students will begin by exploring atomic structure and properties, understanding the composition of atoms, electron configuration, and periodic trends. They will then delve into compound structure and properties, learning about different chemical bonds and how these influence molecular behavior. The semester will also cover the properties of substances and mixtures, exploring how atoms come together to form solids, liquids, and gases, and the forces that govern these processes. As students progress, they will study chemical reactions, differentiating physical and chemical changes, and learning how to express reactions using chemical equations. Kinetics will introduce them to reaction rates and factors affecting them, while thermochemistry will focus on energy changes in reactions, such as endothermic and exothermic processes. Equilibrium will teach how reactions evolve over time and how systems achieve balance. The course will also cover acids and bases, including pH, buffers, and their role in chemical reactions. Thermodynamics and electrochemistry will introduce the concept of "thermodynamic favorability" and how chemical reactions can generate electricity. Additionally, the semester will provide a foundational understanding of biological molecules, such as proteins, carbohydrates, and nucleic acids, along with an introduction to organic chemistry. To enhance learning, the teacher will perform fun and easy experiments and guide students on how to write scientific methods effectively, making the semester both informative and engaging for students.
