SchoolNova at Stony Brook is committed to ensure the health and well-being of our students and staff by developing and implementing school health safety measures required to meet the challenges of coronavirus (COVID-19).

We are currently following the lead of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the New York State Department of Health (NYDH), Stony Brook University (SBU), as well as other local, state, and federal agencies to make sure we have the most up-to-date information available.

In order to facilitate the safest learning environment possible, SchoolNova at Stony Brook has adopted the following COVID-19 safety protocols:

Before Coming to School

To reduce transmission in school, it is vital that no student, parent, teacher, or staff member comes to school while sick.

  • We ask parents/guardians to check their child/children for any COVID-19 symptoms prior to arrival to school, which includes checking the child’s temperature.
  • The symptoms may include:
    • Fever or chills
    • Cough
    • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
    • Fatigue
    • Muscle or body aches
    • Headache
    • New loss of taste or smell
    • Sore throat
    • Congestion or runny nose
    • Nausea or vomiting
    • Diarrhea
  • We ask anyone with any signs or symptoms of an illness to stay home.
  • Please refer to a CDC Self-Checker to help identify signs of illness.
  • Parents/guardians should remind their children of the proper hygiene practices
  • Make sure to have masks prepared before arriving to school.
  • Unlike other years, many supplies must be carried in and out by students each time to avoid sharing in the classroom, some materials may need to be printed at home - develop a system to help remember to bring them. Please label your supplies.

Entering the Building

To help mitigate the spread of illness, SchoolNova at Stony Brook has established a set of rules regarding the entry and the presence in the building. We appreciate the community's understanding and expect full cooperation in following these guidelines.

  • Masks are required to be worn by all individuals above 2 years old inside all buildings.
  • Physics Building - the building with the largest congregation of students and staff:
    • The main entrance will serve as the only point of entry/no exit between 9:00 am and 1:00 pm. Please refer to the map. All other doors will serve as exit only.
    • We ask parents/guardians to self-certify their children being COVID-19 symptom-free by having each child wear a green wrist bracelet or any other green-color identifier. We will provide the bracelets.
    • In the absence of a green self-certification identifier, the child’s temperature will be taken at the entrance by our trained staff and parents will be asked to fill out a self-certification form, which may cause delays and result in being late to class.
    • We recommend that families arrive a few minutes early to avoid the rush and entrance congestion;
    • Physical distance of at least 3 feet should be maintained during the entry and inside;
    • In case of an emergency - all exits will work as intended in the original building plan
  • Other buildings - Math Tower, Harriman Hall, Earth and Space Sciences:
    • There is a limited number of students attending classes in other buildings - entry and exit will follow as usual;
    • We ask that only individuals attending classes enter the buildings to avoid any unnecessary traffic;
  • Under no circumstances the basement levels of any buildings may be entered.

At School

  • Masks are required indoors at all times
  • Physical distance of at least 3 feet must be observed
  • SchoolNova staff is fully vaccinated against COVID-19
  • SchoolNova has a designated isolation area and a care plan in the event of a student developing symptoms in the course of the day. We will provide supervision until the student is picked up by a parent/guardian.
  • In the hallways:
    • When walking down the hallways, we ask everyone to stay close to the wall on their right and observe at least 3 feet of physical distance from each other
    • Students waiting to enter their classroom should stay on the opposite side of the classroom door from the direction of exiting students.
    • Waiting: Parents/Guardians are encouraged to wait outside (weather permitting), return to their vehicles or stay in Room 113 (fully masked) while waiting for their children. Please refrain from eating/sharing food in the hallways or the waiting Room 113
  • In the classrooms:
    • No eating is allowed in the classrooms. Only individual capped water bottles are permitted.
    • Supplies sharing must be avoided. Teachers may:
      • Provide individual supplies - it’s a student’s responsibility to bring them to each class;
      • Give a list of supplies asking parents to provide them for their student;
      • Ask to print materials at home to avoid hand-outs;
    • The contact surfaces in the classrooms must be disinfected between the classes - we ask to respect the time needed to conduct the proper cleaning and not enter the classrooms until invited by the teacher;
    • There are two doors in most of the classrooms - each designated for entry or exit only - posted signs will help determine the layout;
    • Each classroom is equipped with a hand-sanitizing station - students and staff are encouraged to practice good hand hygiene routinely throughout the day;
    • The room size, class size, students’ age and parent’s vaccination status are among the determining factors for permission for parents to be present in classrooms:
      • For students 5yo and younger: one parent may be present with each child - the parent must be fully vaccinated;
      • For students 5 to 7yo: one helping parent per class - sign up for a rotating schedule is required - the parent must be fully vaccinated;
      • For students 7yo and older: no parents may be present in classrooms;
      • Parents who have to attend to student’s special needs must make arrangements with their teacher by writing to the teacher in advance
    • Only fully vaccinated adults will be permitted to be present in the classrooms. SchoolNova administration may request a proof of vaccination at random. We reserve the right to deny parents’ presence in the classrooms.

Between Schooldays

A key strategy for successful mitigation of the spread of COVID-19 is to maximize the  interruption of chains of transmission. SchoolNova is committed to do its part, but we need our community cooperation:

  • We ask parents/guardians to notify SchoolNova administration if a student tests positive for COVID-19 within 72 hours after attending SchoolNova by writing to director@schoolnova.org
  • Any information regarding a student's health, test results, vaccination status, and identity are never shared with anyone and will be handled with complete confidentiality.
  • If we learn of a potential exposure by our students to a confirmed case of COVID-19, all families from that class will be notified

Due to the nature of COVID-19, SchoolNova guidelines are subject to change based on local data, and public health directives or guidance.
