Description:

During our lives, we often face elections. It could be students' elections for class representatives, and it could be a jury voting for a winner of some competition. In the US, it's a year of the presidential elections, and in November 2020, US citizens will be voting for the next President. In sports, awarding points to athletes and deciding the winner can also be viewed as an election in a general sense. In this course, we will look at the mathematics of voting. We will talk about different ways to decide the outcome of the elections, breaking ties, discuss if any of the election methods can be considered fair, talk about the role of coalitions in elections, and see how the electoral college system works in the US. We will see that there is plenty of mathematics in these topics, and some of it is pretty advanced.
