CaféNova - Feb 27, 2020 meeting

The event takes place on Thursday, February 27, 2020 at 6pm, in room S-240 in Math Building at StonyBrook University. Our guests will be Lilianne Mujica-Parodi, Helmut Strey, and Vyacheslav Yurchenko.

High Schoolers met with graduate students and professors to explore various biology research topics at the second CafeNova event of 2020 on Feb. 28.
Guests included Helmut Strey, associate professor of biomedical engineering and director of the Laboratory for Micro and Nano Technologies at Stony Brook University, Lilianne Mujica-Parodi, director of the Laboratory for Computational and Neurodiagnostics and professor of biomedical engineering at Stony Brook University and Vyacheslav Yurchenko, professor of molecular biology and genetics at the University of Ostrava in the Czech Republic. Mujica-Parodi brought three graduate students who currently do research at her lab for students to ask them questions about graduate life as well.
Students learned about the pros and cons of working at small and big laboratory groups.
“Find the right environment and try what you want to try,” Strey advised.
Yurchenko, who works in the Czech Republic, was able to talk about working with an international science community. With the help of the internet, Yurchenko can tap into global collaborations to accomplish cutting edge breakthroughs in his lab.
Amna Hashmi and Nethmi Withanage, two high school juniors interested in neuroscience, took the chance to ask about balancing passions in art with careers in science, as well as about research opportunities for the summer.
“Everyone talked about their stories of getting into science, which I really liked,” Hasmi said. “And the advice offered was great.”
