Le Grand Concours - French language competition

Dear Parent,

National French Contest - 2018

This year again, SchoolNova is offering to our French students the possibility of participating in the National French Contest. I will register our students of French and hope they will enjoy participating. It is an annual Concours sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French (AATF). It is a great motivational and extracurricular activity/contest for students of French. Le Grand Concours is on the list of approved tests published by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) http://www.principals.org/.

The students will participate in the contest at their respective level. For FLES students (French Language Elementary School), it consists of a multiple-choice of about 60 questions covering listening comprehension and vocabulary. Students listen to a CD and choose between pictures a, b or c, the image most appropriate to each sentence. It is about one (1) hour long or less. The contest for levels 01-5 is also a multiple-choice test of 60 to 70 items covering listening comprehension, vocabulary and grammar in context, as well as readings. During the next few weeks, I will review previous level tests in class so that the students are familiar with the format and expectations.

I encourage all our students in French classes to experience this contest. It is but the first of many similar written examinations that they will face in the future, and the experience alone of participating, I think, has merit. There is no failure nor are there negative consequences to the test. There are prizes for those earning National and Chapter recognition as well as certificates for those scoring in the top 50% and the top 20%. The students whose scores represent the top scores nationally are considered Lauréats Nationaux and as such receive a certificate and a prestigious National award. You can find more information about the event at http://www.frenchteachers.org/concours/.

The contest will be administered on Sunday, February 11, 2018 (FLES part) and Sunday, March 11, 2018 (Levels 01-5) at SchoolNova (physics building, Stony Brook University). The time will be during SchoolNova regular Sunday hours, determined at a later date. Bonne chance !

Sincerely,

Marleine Chiofalo
French Teacher
