Intro to Cybersecurity A, Summer 2020

Room:
Time: Tuesday, Thursday 2:15PM - 3:15PM
Grades: 7-12
Prerequisites:
Material fee: $0.00

Description: During this course, students will learn some fundamentals of cybersecurity and how web servers, such as websites, need to implement cybersecurity practices to keep their data safe. The first half of this course will focus on setting up a web server using virtual machines and getting used to using different terminal-based operating systems, such as CentOS 7 Linux. Students will be able to learn how to customize their web servers and websites to be able to add user interactivity, web content (images, text, videos), and forms for user input.
The second half of the course will focus on making our web servers more secure -- we will learn more about web vulnerabilities and types of cyber-attacks. We will demonstrate how easy it may be to "hack" our websites using the vulnerabilities we discussed. Then, we will fix our web servers to prevent these types of attacks.

Prerequisite: Basic background in computer science or computer programming is preferred for grades 9-12.
Students in grades 7-8 MUST have experience in computer programming or IT; email me at alex.cartwright@schoolnova.org with inquiries so I can confirm the student's admission into the course.
