CafeNova - January 15, 2019

We are happy to announce that CafeNova inaugural meeting took place on the evening of January 15, 2019!

We had professors Harold (Hal) Metcalf and Eden Figueroa of the Department of Physics and Astronomy of Stony Brook University as featured guests. After informal introductions they told us how they got involved into research in AMO field and what drives them in physics research and in the life in academia in general. Then they took everyone for a short tours to their labs. We saw the prototype of future quantum computer including quantum memory “hard drives”, encrypted quantum transmission line and single qubit quantum gates in Eden’s lab. Then we proceeded to Hal’s lab to see inner guts of a setup designed to perform state-of-art manipulations of atoms using laser light. We also played with liquid nitrogen and saw what “a lot of light” means (10W green light laser). After these exciting tours we played board games such as “Set” and “Blokus”.

We are looking forward to the next meeting of CafeNova scheduled for the first Tuesday of February (February 5). To learn about the program of that meeting stay tuned for future CafeNova announcements.
